I’m going to say No.

How long have you been riding or riding with MP

4 years, 6 months

What got you into cycling

At four years old I wanted to do everything my big brother did so I learnt to ride his BMX.  That corresponded with BMX Bandits being released at the movies, I was hooked and I’ve loved it ever since!

Do you compete

I love doing the long distance timed rides like 3 Peaks and Fitz’s Challenge, the longer the better!

Favorite ride/race

Fitz’s Challenge, it’s always really challenging and is a great spring ride

Favorite post ride snack

A croissant from Goose Bakery in Forest Lodge.  Yum yum.

Something interesting about you

Despite what you might think, I got Phil into cycling, not the other way around.

“Even after cycling 14,000km across multiple continents, she still can’t park her bike without it falling over” Phil Cross, 2015

what’s your favourite thing about training with MP’?

There’s a huge range of people to ride with.  If you want to ride hard, there’s some really strong girls to push you.  If you want a coffee ride, someone will be doing that too.

I always known as Emo at home, but didn’t bring that with me.  Seems it was already taken anyway…  I have been called the White Kenyan (after Froome) by a couple of guys, but it didn’t catch on (thankfully!)

How long have you been riding or riding with MP

I started riding with MP in 2013 I think..  I got my first road bike in 2008, a Specialized Allez, before upgrading to a full carbon Scott Foil in 2012.  This lasted 5 years before getting a newer version.  My TT is the stuff of bike porn sites, a BMC time machine, which was bought in 2014.

What got you into cycling

I was bored of team sports, and I started doing more endurance stuff.  My brother had just bought a road bike and we were about to launch what is now the largest cycling club in the UK, so it seemed like a good time to do it.  The weather and roads are obviously far different to here, would have loved a set up like MP when I first got going, as it was just the hard-core guys at that stage, so getting dropped was a weekly event.  You learned the hard way.

Do you compete

I have been racing for about 8 years.  Initially a lot of TTs (very big in England, multiple races a week), then more triathlon stuff, but in Aus I favour road races over crits, despite racing these as something to do close to my door step

Favorite ride/race

Favourite rides, I have so many! So I will split by region.

In England – Burnsall loop from Ilkley.  A rolling 40km loop that was my backyard for a few years.  I had the KOM for that loop too, I just checked and it seems I have now lost it, so need to book a holiday to rectify!

In Australia I like the Berry Mountain loop, maybe going up Barrengarry up to Fitzroy Falls.  We did this one of the early MP camps and it has stayed a good memory (and a great place to do a 20 minute test)

In France: Menton loop, including the (in)famous Col de la Madone.  Lance, Froome, Porte and co have all made this their testing ground, and I have sweated my way up it a few times too.  Riding from sea level to the top of the mountains before a quick decent back into Monaco, before a beach cruise back to Menton for fresh pain au chocolate.  What could be better?!

As for favourite race? Although I have only race it once it is tempting to say the Tour of Bright, a 3 day stage race, including a summit finish up Mount Hotham, but I guess I have to say the West Head Road race, given it is where I have had most success.

Favorite post ride snack

Vanilla yoghurt and mix muesli (at home).  Ask me for my recipe if you want to try!

Something interesting about you

I was very much a team sports guy growing up, football and cricket.  I once scored straight from the kick off in a football game.  3 seconds.  We should have had it validated by the Guinness Book of Records.

Anything else you wish to share.

There are so many clichés in cycling, around it not getting easier, you just go quicker, no bad weather, just bad clothing etc.  But ultimately these are true.  However, remember why you do it and the joy sometimes of simply riding your bike.  I have had my fair share of injury and illness and sometimes when coming back from these you remember how fantastic the movement of riding a bike can be.

Oh and always nod / wave at oncoming riders.  It costs nothing and you might just help that guy make it home after he has bonked several miles from home….
